CELEBRATION OF HER MAJESTY'S BIRTHDAY.
LEVEE AND BALL AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE. On Thursday, May 19,
The official celebration of Her Majesty's birthday took place, according to previous
proclamation in the Gazette. The shops in town were for the most part open
as on other days the citizens of Adelaide preferring to keep Her Majesty's
birthday according to the almanac, instead of according to the Gazette.
We believe, however, that the Government celebration was fixed for the
19th, in order to secure the advantages of a moonlight night for the homeward
journeys of His Excellency's guests upon the occasion. The day was cold, wet, and
dreary; but the sight of the Royal Standard, floating from the top of the
Government flagstaff, attracted a considerable number of persons in the vicinity
of its glories, and as the hour of noon ap proached, a fair stream of
Her Majesty's Liege subjects might have been observed wending their way toward
the scene of action.
A little prior to the holding of the levee, a military
demonstration on a small scale took place in the paddock fronting the
Police Barracks, and before the noon-day gun was fired, the visitors at
the levee were in pretty good force on the ground.
The order of proceedings varied in nothing particular
from former occasions. His Excellency and suite were assembled in one of the
rooms in the eastern wing of Government House, visitors entering at the eastern door,
and after exchanging salutations with His Excellency, passing out at the
principal entrance.
The following are the names of the gentlemen who attended THE MORNING LEVEE.
Mr. and Mrs. Heighway Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Derwas Jones, Mr. Henry Jones,
20 may 1859,
Government, House never presented a scene of
gaiety and magnificence equal to that of Thursday
evening. The whole suite of apartments was, of
course, brilliantly lighted up, the rich chandeliers
in the ball-room, and the new decorations audtnttings
appearing to the utmost advantage. The company,
as may be seen from our list, was both numerous and
fashionable ; in fact, the presence of Lady MaeDonnell
was alone wanting to render the affair perfect. "We
ehall not attempt to play the part of a Court journal
or to characterise the details of the evening ' Suffice
it to say that a more numerous, gayer, or more
animated company never met within the walls of
G-ovemnient House.
The following is a list of the persons invited .....
