Mr. Redmond Jones, left Clifton College. England, at 17, and returned to Australia, where he spent some time gaining stock and station experience.
Forty years ago Mr. (now Sir) John Grice commissioned him to take a big lot of horses from Albury to Manfred Downs, his station in Queensland; they were nearly a year on the road, such were the difficulties of travelling stock in a terrible drought year.
For four years Mr. Redmond Jones was on the Western Australian goldfields.

| RETURNED MEN MAN STRONG POST Seven hundred returned men from several theatres of war manned a strong post near the railway station at Sale, on Wednesday. The “marshal was Mr. Gordon Drane, formerly of the 13th Light Horse Regiment, who won the military medal and bar inthe first world war. VETERANS of the South African war were prominent many of them being in their eighties, and they recalled with pride the comradeship that existed in those far-off days and which was emulated by the men of the 1914-18 war and the 1939 45 conflict. Bairnsdale's oldest soldier, Mr. Redmond Jones, aged 96 years, who had looked forward to seeing the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, and who was to have been the special care of members of the Bairnsdale- sub-branch of the R.S.E., was taken ill on Tuesday evening. and was unable to make the trip. It was'a great disappointment to Mr. Jones that he was unable to attend, also to his comrades at Bairnsdale. He served with an English regiment in the South African War. Included in the ranks were men from many districts of Gippsland, and friendships were renewed and incidents recalled of the fighting in many countries in which men of the A.I.P. had been engaged. |
